New York City Culture
|
New York City is arguably
the most multi-cultural city in the world. A friend made a
comment to me that every different language is spoken on the
streets of New York City except English. That’s a bit
of an exaggeration. Though, it’s not uncommon to hear
people conversing in different languages.
Over the last century New York Harbor welcomed millions of
immigrants to the United States.
|
Consequently, New York developed into a hub of cultural diversity
with many cultural neighborhoods including Italian, Jewish, and Chinese.
Even today, more immigrants settle in New York City then anywhere
else.
New York City is the nation’s financial capital. Not to mention
a major center for entertainment, media and fashion. If you are
ambitious and have dreams, New York City is the place to realize
them. New York City’s culture attracts many alpha types. Everyone
wants to be the best. New York is a city of tough, business savvy,
work-alcoholics that never sleep. However, for many people New York
City can be overloading. People usually either love or hate New
York City.

New York City Shopping
|
New York City is a major center
for high fashion and, as you’d expect, offers some of
the best shopping in the nation. The city’s premier shopping
areas can be found on Fifth Avenue & 57th Street and on
Madison Avenue (between 57th Street and 79th Street). Here you’ll
find a wide selection of ultra-chic as well as ultra-expensive
designer boutiques to choose from. Fifth Avenue’s most
fabulous store is, of course, Tiffany’s. Meanwhile, Barney’s
New York and |
Anne Taylor anchor Madison Avenue’s shopping emporium. Once
upon a time, only the very rich could afford to could go shopping
in these glamorous areas. However, many mainstream retailers have
recently setup shop, making the areas seemingly more approachable
for the rest of us.
In
the early 1900’s, 23rd Street was the preferred shopping district
for the wealthy uptown class. The area gradually fell from grace
as stores dispersed throughout the city. However, new life as been
brought back to the 23rd Street locality as many popular retailers
have rediscovered the neighborhood and are working to restore the
area’s luster.
Other preferred shopping areas include Greenwich Village and Soho.
The main drag in Greenwich Village is called Bleeker Street. Here
you’ll find the latest fashions at surprisingly affordable
prices. Soho’s hip boutiques have earned a reputation for
trendsetting. However, to the dismay of many New Yorkers, national
chains have begun to take a foothold on the area; therefore, diminishing
Soho’s trendsetter image. Though, you can still find plenty
of trendy shops between Broadway and Sullivan Street.
If bargain hunting is more to your liking, you may want to spend
some time exploring Chinatown. Here you’ll find discount prices
on items such as sunglasses, watches and leather goods. You may
even be able to find deals on electronics. However, be careful whom
you deal with. Theses items may be hot. The Historic Orchard Street
Shopping District, located on the lower east side, is another area
that’s great for bargain hunting.
The South Street Seaport is another area worth mentioning. You
won’t find anything that you couldn’t find in your hometown.
However, the ambience and spectacular harbor views provide for a
delightful shopping experience that’s true to New York City.
