A Tropical City-State.
Singapore has long been known for its ultra-tidy
policing, like its notorious chewing gum ban that lasted over
a decade. But the city-state is so much more than a network
of pristine streets. Perhaps the best way to delve into Singapore’s
history is to start by visiting Raffles Hotel, home of
the famous Singapore Sling. Invented by a local sometime in
the early 1900s, the drink’s creation has since become
somewhat of an urban legend (the story goes that the original
recipe was lost and forgotten sometime in the 1930s, until
it somewhat reemerged through the memories of former bartenders
and rediscovered notes). The drink is refreshing, with its
cherry brandy, pineapple and limejuice. But the hotel itself
is also steeped in
history. Built in 1887 with
tropical gardens and terracotta-tiled courtyards, the Raffles
Hotel was considered the place for British colonials. Today,
it stands as a reminder of Singapore’s less than-independent
past but offers a decadent setting with a rich guest list
that includes the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Rudyard Kipling. Hotels in Singapore offers excellent services and affordable rates.
This tropical city-state, which remains warm and humid year
round, has an eclectic mix of religions and cuisines. Most
Singaporeans follow the Buddhist tradition, though many follow
the Islamic, Christian, Taoist, Catholic and Hindu faith.
You won’t have any problem finding English-speakers
here, as it’s the second most commonly used language.
But you’ll find the best adventures await in the various
ethnic enclaves scattered throughout Singapore, from Arab
Street to Little India.
